Revised Regulations for the Army of the United States, 1861, Article XL, state that to enlist you must be:

A free, white male

Between the ages of eighteen and thirty five (under twenty one requires consent of parent or guardian)

At least five feet, three inches tall

Effective, able-bodied, sober, free from disease

Of good character and habits

In possession of a competent knowledge of the English language

Without a wife or child-this applies only in times of peace
